Enjoy wine tastings and dinner at a Saxon winery, and cruise the River Elbe on a paddle steamer. Visit Wittenberg Castle Church where Martin Luther defiantly nailed his 95 Theses that launched the Reformation and changed the course of European history forever. Depart the United States, flying overnight to Berlin, Germany.
Arrive at Berlin Tegel Airport and transfer to our elegant 4-star art-nouveau style hotel in the center of old West Berlin. Some time to relax before excursion to the Reichstag, the historic parliamentary building restored after German reunification. Welcome dinner at the rooftop restaurant of the Reichstag.

Today explore Berlin with a local guide, a city of incredible beauty and intrigue. Visit Checkpoint Charlie, the name given by the Western allies for the best known Berlin Wall crossing point, the narrow cobbled streets and old taverns of Nicholas’ Quarter of Old Berlin, the Greek Revival architecture of German architect, Schinkel, the elegant Unter den Linden boulevard conceived by Frederick William, and the iconic Brandenburg Gate. Lunch included at quintessential Berlin restaurant.

Today is free for your own exploration of Berlin or to visit the wide array of museums the city has to offer. A museum pass is included to the museums of Spree Island which include the Old National Gallery (French Impressionists), Pergamon and Altes Museums (Classical antiquities), and Bode Museum (sculpture, Byzantine art). You may also visit the Gemäldegalerie (Botticelli, Titian, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Dürer), and/or Jewish Museum by American architect Daniel Libeskind. The hotel is well located for all of these visits and our tour leader will be on hand for any help needed. Say farewell to Berlin with dinner from another iconic building, the revolving restaurant of the Berlin TV Tower.

Berlin, Wittenburg, Leipzig
Depart Berlin for Leipzig via Wittenberg which celebrates the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation. Guided tour of Stadtkirche (known as the ‘Mother Church of the Reformation’) and Schlosskirche (where Luther posted his 95 Theses). Continue to musical city of Leipzig for lunch at Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum (Europe’s oldest coffee house frequented by Wagner, and Mendelssohn among others). Walking tour of Leipzig before recital at St Thomas Church where Bach was choirmaster. Dinner at a traditional Saxon restaurant.

Whole day excursion to Weimar, long considered Germany’s cultural capital, with many places designated at UNESCO World Heritage sites. Walking tour with local guide to include the opulent residence of Wagner’s father-in-law, Franz Liszt and the home of Germany’s greatest classical poet, Goethe. Walking tour of Weimar with a local guide to include homes of Schiller, Goethe and Liszt. Lunch include at Weimar’s renowned White Swan Restaurant. Return to Leipzig where we hope to coincide (at optional extra cost) with a performance at the Leipzig Opera House or a concert at the Gewandhaus, home of the world’s oldest municipal orchestra.

Today we leave Leipzig and head south east to Dresden, Saxony’s capital. On route visit Colditz Castle made famous as a Prisoner of War Camp for allied officers. Tour the castle and hear about the many escape attempts. “If you want something done properly, go to Dresden” declared Bach. During our stay in the capital of Saxony we will explore Dresden’s glories including the beloved Semper Opera House, Augustus the Strong’s astounding treasures in the Historic Green Vault of Dresden Castle, and the superbly reconstructed Frauenkirche. We shall experience Dresden’s famous Eierschecke Cake at Dresdner Kaffeestubchen. Free evening.

This morning we continue our visits of Dresden before joining a paddle steamer with lunch on board for a cruise along the Elbe River to Schloss Pillnitz. Return to Dresden for some free time before excursion to a winery for wine tastings and dinner.

Whole-day excursion to medieval town of Meissen for tour of world famous Royal Meissen Porcelain Factory, home of fine china since 1710. Return to Dresden via Schloss Moritzburg, a magnificent Baroque palace of four round towers surrounded by water. Farewell dinner at one of Dresden’s top rated restaurants.
