Culinary Tour Itinerary
Our culinary tour begins in Naples, Italy. We arrive at the Naples airport and transfer to our hotel located in the historic center of this vibrant city. After some time to check in and relax, those who aren’t too tired can join our tour director for an informal walkabout the city; this will, of course, include a visit to a famous bar where the best espresso in Naples is rumored to be made. Tonight’s welcome dinner is at a lively seaside restaurant offering only the freshest seafood!
After a leisurely breakfast and morning, we make our way to the location of our hands-on cooking lesson, an upscale local restaurant. With the chef, we will learn how to make some traditional Neapolitan recipes with a modern twist, and then we will dine on our creations. This afternoon and evening we have free time in which to explore the bustling streets of Naples.
Today is bound to be a day you will never forget; a very unusual treat for a culinary tour. With our private expert guide, we will visit the most remarkable archeological discovery ever unearthed: Pompeii. The incredibly preserved houses, streets, shops, even brothels, present a fascinating chronicle of daily life in 79 A.D., when one fateful day the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius “froze” life in an instant. Afterward, we stop at a local vineyard at the base of Mt. Vesuvius for a wine-tasting lunch. This small-production vineyard produces both red and white Lacryma Christi DOC wine as well as Aglianico and Falanghina and organic olive oil. Of course, we will get to taste each and every one, along with the cantina’s delicious spaghetti con pomodori. Fully sated, we continue on to our hotel in Sorrento, our home for the next six nights of our culinary tour, for a free evening.
After a leisurely breakfast and morning, we head to a local frantoio, an olive-oil mill, to see how organic olive oil is produced. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the idyllic village of Sorrento, the legendary home of the sirens that attempted to lure Homer’s hero, Ulysses, to the dangerous rocky shore. The quaint streets of Sorrento are filled with wonderful ceramics, leather and inlaid wood shops, and the scent of flowers permeates the air. We reconvene this evening for a gourmet dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant within walking distance of our hotel.
This morning we board a ferry for the next stop on our culinary tour, the enchanting Isle of Capri, for a full day of exploration! With our private guide, we take a walking tour of the quaint villages of Capri and Anacapri. Explore the awe-inspiring Gardens of Augustus and the Villa San Michele, the former home of Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe. Before returning to the mainland, we have free time to explore the myriad shops or perhaps take a public boat tour around the island. We return to Sorrento for a group dinner at a local restaurant.
Today is all about food and wine! We head to a private villa in Sorrento for a hands-on cooking lesson. We begin with a snack of lemon-flavored plum-cake and a Neapolitan coffee at the villa, and then head to the kitchen to prepare some typical regional dishes of Sorrento and Campania. We then take a break to visit the family’s wine cellar and taste some handcrafted homemade wines and local cheeses, after which we’ll dine on the fruits of our labor. The evening will be free to do whatever we want. Perhaps going to an evening performance of the “Tarantella” folk show will be in order…
This morning, we head to the town of Amalfi, the namesake of the Amalfi Coast. Unbeknownst to most, Amalfi was the first maritime republic in Italy. We will have a private guided walking tour of town, to include the Duomo of St. Andrew, a gorgeous example of Arab-Norman architecture, built in the 12th Century. All this history demands that we get back to the business of vacationing, so we head to the award-winning Marisa Cuomo Cantina for a tour of the small vineyard as well as a gourmet wine-tasting lunch. We then head to Positano, considered by many to be the jewel of the coast. The pastel buildings clinging precipitously to the mountainside is the quintessence of picturesque. We will have free time to explore the maze of alleyways and stairs that make this town unique. Free evening in Sorrento.
For the last full day of our culinary tour, we head to a water-buffalo farm to see the production of traditional and authentic bufala mozzarella by hand. We tour the farm and then get to sample the delicate and sweet cheese for ourselves. We guarantee you have never tasted mozzarella so delectable! We head back to the Amalfi Coast, stopping in the gorgeous town of Ravello, known for classical music (and specifically, the composer Wagner), for a guided tour of the magnificent gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. After some downtime back at our hotel, we reconvene for a gourmet farewell dinner and cin cin to our wonderful culinary tour on the Amalfi Coast!
Group transfer to the Naples Capodichino Airport for return our flights home.
